TOWER FAMILIES

L2, L8, L12 and L13 lattice steel towers

Design, reassessment and refurbishment of the National Grid tower portfolio at 275kV and 400kV, alongside wood pole and trident pole distribution lines. Structural analysis is carried out to BS EN 50341-1 with the UK National Normative Aspects and the relevant NGET technical specifications.

L2275kV / 400kV

Double-circuit lattice

The classic post-war 400kV double-circuit suspension family still forming much of the GB grid.

Assessment, uprating and refurbishment of L2 suspension and tension towers — including body extensions, leg extensions, member replacement and foundation reassessment for higher conductor tensions.

L8400kV

Heavy-duty lattice

Robust 400kV family used where higher loading, longer spans or larger conductors are required.

Loading tree development, member and bolt-group checks, and TOWER modelling for L8 structures on reconductoring and HTLS uprating schemes.

L12400kV

Low-height / compact lattice

Lower-profile 400kV design used where visual impact or clearance constraints govern.

Clearance and profile verification, wind and ice load cases to BS EN 50341, and coordination of L12 structures with planning and landscape constraints.

L13400kV

Modern double-circuit lattice

Later-generation 400kV double-circuit family used on new-build and diversion schemes.

New-build and diversion design using L13 towers, including foundation loading, tower spotting and construction sequencing within outage windows.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

The overhead line design was delivered ahead of our outage window and cleared the TO's technical assurance first time. Genuinely rare on a scheme of this complexity.
Placeholder — Programme Manager
Transmission Owner, Scotland
Clear, pragmatic engineering advice throughout the connection process. The earthing and fault level work removed a major risk from our grid application.
Placeholder — Development Director
Renewable energy developer
Acted as our client engineer on an NEC4 contract and kept the design interfaces under control. Excellent stakeholder handling with landowners and the DNO.
